Kebler Pass
Kebler Pass is known to be one of the most beautiful scenic views during the fall colors in our entire country. People flock from all over to come and captivate this incredible experience. It is also home to herds of Elk, deer, moose, mountain lions, bears, sheep, eagles, bobcats, beavers, and a variety of wild life. Many photographers have captured that element of beauty.
Kebler Pass is a breathtaking high mountain 30 mile pass on County Road 12. It connects County Road 133 at Paonia Park to Crested Butte. Kebler Pass is over 10,000 feet above sea level with amazing views of the West Elk Mountains, Anthracite Creek, Lakes and waterfalls, wild flowers, wild animals, and more!
Kebler Pass offers incredible views with scenic views of Lost Lake, Irwin Lake, Erikson Springs, Ohio River Pass, variety of different mountain views and waterfalls and Horse Ranch Park. It’s home to some of the most impressive Crested Butte hiking! There are dozens of amazing hiking trails along with Horse Trails.
In the fall you will see hundreds fall aspens around every turn, including one of the nation’s biggest aspen groves with amazing color!
Kebler Pass is considered one of the best scenic drives in Colorado, particularly in the fall.
Mountains on Kebler Pass
The West Elk Mountains include Marcellina Mountain, Mount Gunnison, East and West Becckwith Mountain, Anthracite Range, Mount Axtell, Carbon Peak and Whetstone Mountain. These mountains are magnificent to view from Kebler Pass.
The Elk Mountains were formed around 34 million years ago, when Oligocene Magmas intruding the Colorado Mineral Belt from Late Proterozoic. All of these mountains are the result of intrusion of this molten magma when ejected material to form the West Elk Mountains.
West Elk Peak has an elevation of 13,042 ft which is the highest summit in the West Elk Mountains of Gunnison County, Colorado. The terrain consists mostly of volcanic breccia, known in this area as West Elk Breccia, dated at 35 to 30 million years old. Long ago, a group of composite andesitic stratovolcanoes developed in the West Elk Mountains. The eruptive products of these volcanoes constitute the West Elk Breccia.
Somerset, Colorado
Somerset is a small mining town with a post office and fire station built in 1896 located about 10 miles from Pearl Ranch. Working Elk Creek Coal Mine is an underground coal mine, operated by Mountain Coal Company LLC, producing 4.6 million short tons per annum which is loaded onto the railroad. The other two mines are closed making this the only running coal mine in Somerset.
